Merrill is a large lake located in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains. The lake
is set in a heavily wooded area just west of Yale Reservoir. This lake is famed
for its Hexagenia Limbata hatch. Merrill Lake’s large trout loose all caution when
these large yellow mayflies hatch. The Hex hatch is a late evening and post sunset
fishery. We fly fish the lake during the day using a variety of methods. When evening
arrives The largest trout in the lake loose all sense of caution and start to feed
with abandon. This is a fly fishing experience that should not be missed. Even the
most experienced fly fisher finds themselves getting the shakes watching huge trout
rise all along the shore line. These trout are waiting for your fly to be cast so
they can jump all over it. This lake produces some huge Rainbows and Cutthroats.
I have seen expert fly fishermen get the shakes so bad they couldn’t cast, while
watching a huge trout slash at a drifting Hex beside the boat. The result is flubbed
casts and missed fish. I always have them take a long breath and calm themselves.
Then they can make that perfect cast needed to hook into that bruiser sipping duns
five rod lengths from the boat.
